Soccer Gear... What do Kids Need?

All soccer players must wear special soccer gear. Players wear uniforms that match the team they are playing on. In addition, all players are required to wear shin guards for protection and cleats with non-metal studs.

Clothes & Equipment

Uniform
Every soccer player will wear a team uniform which will typically consist of a short sleeve jersey and shorts. A number to identify the player is usually affixed to the back of the shirt.
Soccer Socks
Players will wear soccer socks that are knee high. The purpose of these socks is to cover the shin guards.
Warm-up Suit
A warm-up suit is generally required at the classic level of soccer. Since classic soccer players play year-round, a warm-up suit becomes a necessity during winter.
Soccer Cleats
All soccer players are required to wear cleats. The cleats provide traction on grass and turf fields. Kids must wear non-metal cleats due to the danger of injuring other players.
Shin Guards
Shin guards are a requirement to play youth soccer. They are meant to protect the shins and are covered by soccer socks. Younger kids will have an attachment to the bottom of the shin guards to protect their ankles.
Backpack
A backpack is only required for classic soccer players due to the amount of gear they typically carry. A soccer bag always has a separate location to store a soccer ball.
Goalie Gloves
Only soccer players who play the position of goalie will wear goalie gloves. These gloves protect the hands and fingers and make the ball easier to catch.
Soccer Ball
Every player must bring their own soccer ball to practice. Soccer balls come in different sizes ranging from size 3 to size 5 with younger players using a size 3 and older players using a size 5.
